A clear indication of the incorporation of mobile learning into mainstream education and training occurred at the Westminster Hall in London when no fewer than 800 delegates attended the 3rd annual Hndheld Learning conference. The deslegates came from all parts of the educational spectrum: primary schools, secondary schools; further education; higher education; universities; central government, government agencies; local government; large corporations, SMEs and many others. Hadheld Learning had its origins in the UK nearly a decade ago with promary school children using PDAs, largely inspired by Mike Sharples, who was at that time at the University of Birmngham.

Podcasting is an emergent technology which has the potential to aid students with dyslexia in education. We have conducted a pilot study between two groups of students, a control group and an experimental group. The experimental group included students with dyslexia. Both groups were tested on recall of the same information in an experiment by means of a scored questionnaire. The experimental group received the information downloaded to an MP3 player (podcast). The control group received information in the normal face-to-face lecture scenario. The results showed that there was no significant difference in scores between the two groups. This finding has encouraged us to expand the study by making available to students summaries of lectures from two of their course modules at IADT, Dun Laoghaire.
As this research is ongoing we would welcome any comments or suggestions from interested parties about similar experiences or how they would like to receive such content in a mobile context. For example hardware equipment, ipod, mobile phone or PDA also multi-media considerations, audio only, audio + text (powerpoint), audio + graphics, video etc. This research is part of "Incorporating Mobile Learning Into Mainstream Education" Project website (http://www.ericsson.com/mlearning3).

This chapter is written with the intent of clarifying some issues involving in designing for small screens and mobile devices. First the term mobile device is defined, then the mobile devices’ differences from traditional computer screens are taken into consideration. We then decide on what to show the mobile users and how to display it on a small screen. The experiences and recommendations on these issues are based on extended work on the issue of mobile learning as evidenced by EU projects at NKI.

Text messages have a great impact on the academic support of learning activities. We have looked at the background to the use of test messaging in education and have found some successful implementations and best practicies. Our findings will be available on the "Incorporating Mobile Learning Into Mainstream Education" Project website (http://www.ericsson.com/mlearning3). Any comments or further information about the topic is welcome!

This tool allows you to stream your home tv connection to your mobile device, over a 3G or HSDPA network - actually they can do it over GPRS too, but its too slow. All someone would need is an unlimited data plan.
Right now its only for Treos, but there is no reason why it couldn't be adapted for delivery to any smart phone. From the education side, we could film a presentation or an upgrade and stream it live to participants on their PC or their phone as required.

Quizzes implemented based on SMS technology can be a straightforward technique used in support of the pedagogical aims of educational courses. We have looked at the background to the use of quizzes in education and have found some examples of quizzes implemented on various courses. In some cases they support distance education but in others they form part of traditional in-class based education. Our findings will be available on the "Incorporating Mobile Learning Into Mainstream Education" Project website (http://www.ericsson.com/mlearning3) in the coming months and of course we are always interested to hear of more examples of SMS quizzes being used in Education.

A video projector that is the size of a sugar cube has been created by researchers.
The miniature device could be used to project images from mobile phones, PDAs or laptops, according to the team.
